Introduction

Adult Development

The Basics

Having taken on the low productivity – low income families it is a priority
to quickly get the adults into a structured redevelopment programme.

We are responsible for teaching them everything from personal hygiene, acceptable washing standards, appropriate dressing. through to
employable skills such as handicrafts, detailed needlework or sari embroidery, industrial drivers and so forth.

At present we are responsible for ensuring that any adult under taking
our trainee schemes are supported by the following:

  • reputable courses
  • day care for young children
  • food
  • training salary
  • toiletries
  • all training materials
  • job prospects secured

The hours of training in most courses are 9 am – 5 pm, though the driving tuition is undertaken solely in the mornings.

Rickshaws have also been purchased by the project and are available to
the men for renting to do paid work as and when they are able to.

The Staff
Last year we started with sewing and handicraft instructors that brought the students swiftly through the initial steps of their learning curve. With the students’ progress, we have brought further disciplined trainers (and the relevant equipment) on board.

Third party skills are currently used for the driving tuition and so no staff
are directly involved with every day activities here.

The Facilities
The crafts and sewing training are housed in a dedicated location, only a couple of streets away from the stable housing provided and the pre-school. With the growth of equipment and the need to train more staff, the premises may become too small later in the year, but at present the ladies work well with sari frames easily dismantled and stored at times when crafts or sewing machines need to take centre stage.
